The idea for the Disability Awareness Council began when my brother and I noticed a gap in understanding and inclusion within school communities. Among our classmates and peers, stereotypes were common, and information about intellectual and developmental disabilities was limited. We saw firsthand how these misconceptions could lead to exclusion and discomfort. We want to bring on changes in our classrooms. We started creating informational videos about our sister’s disability in her school, and received appreciation and encouraging feedback from educators and classmates.
What began as a personal mission to share information with peers grew into the Disability Awareness Council. We aim to educate students and communities to challenge stigma, celebrate all abilities, and build a more inclusive world through school outreach and programs for kids with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
